What Is The UNSPSC Code?

UNSPSC is the United Nations Standard Products and Services Code.  UNSPSC was jointly developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Dun & Bradstreet Corporation (D & B) in 1998.  UNSPSC was created to be a coding convention that all companies could use and would create an environment where all companies and industries spoke the same language in order to speed-up and rationalize processes.

Why Do I Need The UNSPSC Code

The UNSPSC code is a flexible classification system for achieving company-wide visibility of spends analysis, enabling procurement to deliver on cost-effectiveness demands and to allow full exploitation of electronic commerce capabilities.  The UNSPSC code can help you in three major areas; Procurement, Marketing, and Sales.  By implementing the UNSPSC code in your organization you can speed up the search process for both your company and the customer’s that purchase from you.  

How Does The UNSPSC Code Work?

There are currently thirty eight thousand one hundred and four (38,104) commodity codes in the UNSPSC system.  There are fifty five major categories called Segments that the Commodity codes fall under.  The codes are organized under a four tier system: Segment, Family, Class, and Commodity. There are codes covering a multitude of topics and areas.  There are codes that cover all aspects of animals, plants, industry, building, electrical, public utilities, healthcare, travel, politics, and organizations only to name a few.  There are UNSPSC commodity codes for chickens (10101601), organic compost (10171504), codes for four types of Civilian and commercial rotary wing aircraft, for Peace keeping operations (92111502), for Peace treaties cooperation (93121612), Tax preparers (84111801), Hotels (90111501), Taxicab services (78111804), Vehicle rental (78111808), and many other topics.  

Global Standard:

The UNSPSC code system offers a coding method that is used worldwide and not just nationally.
